Astro Bot Director Leaves Door Open For Pc Version, Shuts Down Playstation Vr2
There are 300 bots to find, and many are pulled from the wider world of gaming. Plenty of the branded bots originate outside of Sony’s stable, with big hitters from Capcom, Konami and Sega represented well — a few of them definitely made my partner yell in excitement, which was adorable in its own right. Some of the more memorable levels stem from popular Sony franchises like God of War, with Astro wielding Kratos’ ax on one planet. Team Asobi really mined Sony’s vaults, far beyond simple Crash Bandicoot callbacks, and into weird and wonderful games like LocoRoco and Vib-Ribbon.
When the PS5 launched, it included a free game called Astro’s Playroom. The short adventure worked as an effective tech demo, starring Astro, for the PS5’s multifaceted (and heavily underutilized) DuelSense controller. It also provided a look back at previous PlayStation releases, including beloved characters and hardware of varying popularity. As I journeyed through Astro Bot’s gorgeous worlds, I was constantly blown away by the clever new hook each level introduced. While a traditional 3D platformer collect-a-thon at its core, Astro Bot is always throwing in a new gimmick to make each level feel fresh and distinct from all the others.
They add variety, keeping the game engaging and far from boring. The game begins with a scene of traveling through space in a huge spaceship that resembles a PS5 console. Suddenly, we are attacked by a green alien, who destroys the spaceship and scatters its parts across various galaxies. Of course, we weren’t traveling alone on the mothership; other bots were with us, and as a result of the wicked attack, they now find themselves in danger. Our charming main hero is rescued by a smaller ship that looks like a DualSense controller. What remains of the PS5 console crashes onto a small, sandy planet, which will serve as our home base from now on.

Over 150 of them in fact, as characters from PlayStation’s vast library of games have made their way into Astro’s world in the form of other bots. There are 789win ‘d expect like Lombaxes, tomb raiders, and a certain rapping dog but, delightfully, some are plucked from the more obscure end of the scale. It’s light touches of irony and slapstick humour like this that keep Astro’s playful tone going throughout. It really is just a delight from start to finish in this regard.

The sheen of the surfaces, slosh of the liquids, scale of the levels, and smoothness of the frame rate are stunning. The physics, as Astro sets piles of hundreds of shiny apples tumbling, or wades through a pool of gold nuggets, are just showing off. I feared it would be a bit of an advert for PlayStation dressed up as a video game – Sony’s own Pepsiman here for the memes and little else.
All of this is incredibly fun and allows the PS5 to truly shine (more on that in a moment). After completing several planets in a galaxy, we unlock a boss level, which is essentially a simple puzzle that requires the efficient use of previously introduced mechanics. Occasionally, after a boss battle, a special level inspired by Sony exclusives awaits us. These special levels are truly amazing, and I won’t elaborate further because experiencing them firsthand is something really unique.
Part of Astro Bot’s success was the lengthy development time and attention given to the game. Many hope Sony will simply let Team Asobi do its thing and are perfectly content giving the next game the time it needs. You must complete the Great Master Challenge in order to find and collect Chop Chop Master Onion Special Bot. As the name implies, this is one of the most difficult levels in Astro Bot, so be sure to check out our full walkthrough for tips on how to complete the Great Master Challenge. At the top, you’ll see a train of enemies and another hourglass.
All these power-ups combined with the varied level design make for a game that never runs short of ideas, and it’s brilliant. The mothership — a PS5, finally filling a role it’s always looked designed to play — crash lands on a desert world at the centre of several nearby galaxies. These systems house the game’s stages, where you’ll spend most of your time, but you’ll also regularly return to the hub world, which evolves and expands as you progress. It falls into a great rhythm of exploring each galaxy and its stages, then returning to the hub to drop off your robot buddies and discover new things to see and do. PS5 pack-in Astro’s Playroom was a taster dish, teasing players with a short but sweet experience; Astro Bot, then, is the full three-course meal.
I know this OST is going to be in my regular rotation once it finally drops on Spotify, because it’s simply too good to leave locked within this game. Astro Bot has proven to be not only one of Sony’s most successful games but one of the most successful games of all time, at least critically speaking. There are three puzzle pieces in “Trapped In Time.” The first is before the level starts, the second is before you go inside, and the third is before you go back outside. Astro Bot may feature a simple tale, yet it is a gleeful game that absolutely nailed all the aspects of a platformer. It became the highest-rated standalone game of 2024 for a reason, right?

The door to the ruin will now open, and you’ll see the disco ball floating above. In Bathhouse Battle, you’ll find the secret exit about midway through the level. Approach the mechanical frog and blow in your controller’s microphone (or simply mute the mic and the game will do it for you). Shrink down and ride the bubbles up the tree (make sure to rescue the caged bot on the way). The secret exit in Go-Go Archipelago doesn’t appear until after you defeat the boss at the end of the level. Use the ladybug to reach where the seal used to be and use your charged melee to dig into the pillar.
