World Tendency’s level of light or darkness would cause certain events to happen as the tendency changed. And when played online, the actions of all players in aggregate affect the tendency, which can make the game unpredictable. But there is one small change that veteran Demon’s Souls players will welcome. It’s not uncommon for FromSoftware fans to experiment with magic, bows, or even daggers, but sometimes, nothing feels quite as comfortable as a solid sword.

More items have been added to give more life to the world of Demon’s Souls, as it would be a shame if it felt static and lifeless with nothing but demons everywhere. Along with this, Bluepoint has given more unique animations to weapons so they all feel different. Getting back into the game now takes mere seconds compared to the original, allowing more time to fight demons and explore the newly imagined world. Waiting to get back into the game is a real bore and ruins the experience of a great game.

Some would consider this game a much more tamed version of a hack-and-slash since the attacks are slower than usual. Each swing must be perfectly timed to hit a target; otherwise, it will leave the player vulnerable to incoming attacks. Fortunately, the PlayStation 5 remake feels more responsive than the original version.

There’s still an annoyingly common tendency to use a shove attack when I don’t mean to, and I wish the developers had done something to better explain World Tendency to newcomers. But those nitpicks notwithstanding, Bluepoint did an excellent job of updating Demon’s Souls to modern standards without changing the core of its gameplay. Perfect and hone your skills in combat – know when to push forward and when to bide your time, as with each missed swing and careless mistake, you risk losing the very souls you’ve worked so hard to collect.
