Multiple Memorial Day ceremonies are scheduled to take place throughout Santa Barbara County on Monday to remember fallen military members and honor their sacrifice. Now that the building is closed, Inda said staff need to find a place to host their events. Noozhawk reported in December 2023 that Inda was part of the team that opened the restaurant at 129 E. Santa Barbara High Graduates Mark School’s 150th Year

 

The Santa Maria Elks will pause rodeo preparations to hold a ceremony starting at 1 p.m. Monday at the veterans memorial inside Gate 2 at the Santa Maria Elks/Unocal Event Center, 4040 Highway 101. The Santa Maria Cemetery,1501 S. College Drive, will host the city’s annual ceremony scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Inda said members of her group will be attending next week’s Santa Barbara City Council meeting during public comment to ask the council to help relocate the group and possibly provide aid in renovating the building. Inda had told Noozhawk before the red-tagging on Friday that she planned to speak to the City Council.

 

Brian Barnwell, a former Santa Barbara city councilman, said he read almost everything Brantingham wrote for nearly 50 years. Brantingham worked through four ownerships of the News-Press — from the legendary Tom Storke, through the McLean family, which owned the now-defunct Philadelphia Bulletin, then the New York Times Co., and eventually McCaw. “Barney was a legend during his tenure at the News-Press, a fixture all around Santa Barbara who was beloved by many,” said Tom Bolton, Noozhawk editor in chief and a former executive editor at the News-Press. The first company that bit on his job application was a newspaper in San Clemente, but it was more of a business/manager role.

Several blocks south, the community’s Juneteenth celebration took place on South H Street in Old Town with music, poetry, historical re-enactments, food, vendors and speeches including by Victor Jordan, publisher of the Lompoc Vision newspaper. In what appears to be the largest protest ever in Santa Barbara, more than 10,000 people gathered near the waterfront Saturday to protest the policies of President Trump, as part of the national No Kings rallies across the nation.
